College Musicians work with Auckland Philharmonia

April 24, 2015 at 8:41 AM

The Jade Quartet, a string ensemble from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, spent a morning at the College demonstrating string playing and composition technique. They work -shopped student compositions and then rehearsed briefly with Kentoris in a session designed to help the choir understand the nuances of singing with an instrumental ensemble.

Kentoris are scheduled to sing with the full Auckland Philharmonia in a concert at the Auckland Museum in May where they will premier a new ANZAC work by New Zealand Composer Kenneth Young. Director of Choirs, Lachlan Craig, said that Kentoris most commonly rehearse and perform with piano so the opportunity to play through one of their pieces with the quartet was too good to miss.

Emily Young and Thomas Scott (Year 12) and Aaron Leng (Year 13) each had a piece recorded by the group who will return in late May to workshop and record more student compositions.

All aspects of the visit are directly related to the orchestra's education programme (APOPS) which the College has been involved with for many years.  The orchestra sends and features a new group each rotation.
