‘My Grandad has a shiny head – because he is bald.’
‘Grandma has lots of wrinkles by her eyes – because she smiles so much.’
‘My Great Opa is in heaven and at night he smiles at us like a big star.’
‘Grandads legs are a bit old and wobbly.’
‘My Pop turns his hearing aid off when he doesn’t want to listen to my Nan.
The Preschool was full of smiles last week when our preschoolers welcomed their grandparents to spend an activity-filled morning. Director Sue Nash welcomed the visitors, drawing their attention to the children’s quotes displayed on the walls – there was much to chuckle about!
The children delighted our visitors with a few of their favourite songs, finishing with an amazing, high-energy rendition of their fitness song, ‘Walk the Dinosaur’ – which was very well received; the grandparents delighting in seeing the youngsters perform!
Mrs Nash thanked the grandparents for the special part they play in their grandchild’s life, speaking of the importance of spending quality time and creating lasting memories. She gave insight into the role that Preschool plays and the importance of building a strong foundation to start the children’s learning journey. The early years are vital in helping children develop their zest for learning, both through play and structured learning. The values of Saint Kentigern are also introduced from an early age; values that are integral to a child’s social development.
Mrs Nash also took the time to thank her staff for the tremendous effort they had put into the morning, acknowledging the special role teachers have in creating positive learning opportunities for the youngsters in their care.
The children had made their own hand print for each grandparent to take home with a poem that read:
You will always be my Grandparent
No matter where I go
’No matter years that pass
Or how big or tall I grow
Today I take my little hand
And place it in your heart
So little me and you
Will never be apart.
After a big morning of fun, play, food and laughter Mrs Nash did say they were welcome to come any day of the year not just Grandparents’ Day – which was met with a huge round of applause!
A great display of books from Paper Plus St Heliers, chosen by the teachers, were purchased by the grandparents and over $1400 of new books and puzzles were donated to Preschool over the morning. A huge thank you to our grandparents for their generosity!
