At the Girls’ School, we provide a wide range of learning experiences inside and outside the classroom to help our students build confidence and self-esteem. School camp is an opportunity for the girls to push themselves beyond their comfort zones and explore new activities.
This term, the Year 5 and 6 students made their way to Whangaparaoa’s Shakespear Lodge to immerse themselves in a range of challenging activities. Blessed with amazing weather, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were able to put their leadership and collaborative skills to the test.
On arrival, the students set up camp and scouted the area. They took a long walk uphill to examine the spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf before sliding back to camp on the much anticipated, waterslide extravaganza! Following dinner, Mrs Chien taught the girls how to create solar ovens which they used to make themselves s’mores – a sweet snack consisting of a chocolate bar and toasted marshmallows sandwiched between graham crackers.
During the Year 5 two-day camp, the students took part in orienteering, worked collaboratively to build a raft, went sailing and learned about boat safety. On their last day, they worked in teams to complete a range of tasks. This helped to develop their communication and logical skills.
The Year 6 students spent three days on site and tried their hand at archery, mountainboarding (snowboarding on grass), raft building, coasteering, kayaking and rock climbing. They were lucky to stay another night which meant they could play a game of spotlight! On the final day, they shared morning tea at the beach and had their last swim before packing up and returning to school.
The girls displayed great courage and determination throughout the wide range of activities that they took part in. It was great to see them support and help one another along the way, as not every task was easy! We thank the parent helpers and Girls’ School and Shakespear Lodge staff who contributed to the experience for the girls. It was fantastic to see everyone have a great time.
