Ask a Year 5 boy what he thought of camp and his response is almost guaranteed to be effusive – an awesome experience!

Fifty two boys, accompanied by ten parents and the two Year 5 teacher, had a fantastic time at their annual camp when they travelled away to Sir Peter Blake’s MERC (Marine Education and Recreation Centre), situated on the beachfront at Long Bay, Auckland.

Over five days, they enjoyed an assortment of activities designed to challenge and create a sense of achievement. With the beach and ocean on their doorstep, a good part of the week was focussed on water-based activities, giving the boys a chance to try their hand at surfing, body boarding, canoeing and kayaking.

On dry land, they were challenged to conquer any fear of heights through learning to abseil, taking on the 30-metre tree climb and testing their skill with the ‘stack ‘em high’ crate challenge.

Camp is also about living alongside others and mucking in when required. They were also ‘challenged’ to keep their bunkrooms tidy, put away their clothes, make sure they dried their wet gear and to give a hand around meal times!

No matter what the age group or the location of the camp, all Boys’ School camps aim to offer new experiences, develop independence, discover self-confidence and help the boys find success in the face of new challenge. The boys returned to school at the end of the week brimming with excitement and totally exhausted!
