Winter sports tournament week concluded yesterday with Saint Kentigern earning two podium finishes and a number of teams qualifying to progress to national competitions. The Premier Netball team made it to the A Grade final of the Upper North Island Secondary School Championships in Hamilton, losing to Mt Albert Grammar 32-42 in the decider.
Mererangi Paul, Christina Oscar, Amorangi Melesala and Sydney Fraser were named in the all-tournament team and Mererangi was selected as the best midcourter! The girls have now qualified for the New Zealand Secondary School Championships in Ashburton next month.
The 1st XV Rugby team travelled to Rotorua to compete in the National Top 4 Championship. In the semi-final, the boys narrowly lost 5-7 to eventual champions Rotorua Boys’ High. In the play-off for third and fourth, Saint Kentigern defeated Otago Boys’ High 31-27 to finish their season on a winning note.
The girls’ and boys’ Premier Basketball teams were playing in the regional championships in Rotorua. Both teams went unbeaten through pool play and finished in fourth place, which qualifies them for the national championships in Palmerston North later this month.
