Gold, Silver And Bronze For College Musicians!

After a busy weekend of music competitions, across a range of genre, we are delighted to learn that a number of our College musicians gave award winning performances, returning with gold, silver and bronze awards at band, ensemble and solo level.
The Music Department has been a hive of activity in recent weeks as they build towards the KBB Music Festival next week, but alongside this, our students have been involved in competitions as varied as Rockquest for our rock bands and this weekend’s national Concert Band and Chamber Music Festivals, as well as the heats of the Auckland School Jazz Band Festival.
The New Zealand Concert Band Association Festival was held over two days attracting a high calibre of bands from around the country, so we were incredibly proud when the Saint Kentigern Concert Band was awarded National Gold, accepted by band leaders, Cindy Yi and James Batten. In addition, a number of smaller ensembles entered and our Sax Quartet, comprising Sam Ou, Visha Bhakhaven, Serina Wang, Bill Zhang, was also awarded National Gold, as was Evan Metcalfe for his French Horn solo. The Horn Quartet of Evan Metcalfe, Steven You, Julia Huang, Torie Pickering were awarded National ilver as was Cindy Yi for her clarinet solo. Basoonist, Venice Qin was awarded National Bronze.
It wasn’t only our band members who were busy. Following on from selection at the Auckland Chamber Music competition, the trio of Ian Chiao, Esther Oh, Ashani Waidyatillake, named Trio Kaleido, went on to compete at this weekend’s National final and they, too, were recognised nationally with a silver award!
Over the same weekend, our Jazz students were also involved in the Auckland Jazz Festival – a busy weekend!
Well done to all these students on your outstanding work!

National Ukulele Youth Development Squad
Annie Ni has auditioned and selected as part of the Youth Development Squad this year. They will perform at the National Festival later this year.
