Local WOW Artist Visits College

To inspire their creativity in the lead up to next week’s Wearable Arts show, our Year 7 and 8 students recently enjoyed a visit from local artist and Wellington World of Wearable Art (WOW) finalist, Melody Brook. Well versed in designing, Melody has entered her extravagant garments in the national WOW awards for the last nine years.

Melody passed on valuable advice to the students on developing the concept and planning of their own garment entries and relayed what she finds helpful in the stages of creating her own works of art. This included an initial brainstorm session where she writes and scribbles down all the ideas she has for her design entry. Once she has all of her ideas down on paper, Melody said she is able to start thinking about the overall effect she wants to create, the different textures she might use and where she will source her materials from. As her ideas are coming together, she said she enjoys seeking out extra items like beads from op shops, feathers from the beach and even dying tea bags!

The students were also able to see one of Melody’s WOW avante garde designs first hand. Called ‘The Kea’, the elaborate garment, complete with a detailed head piece was modelled by Year 7 student, Elizabeth Lightfoot and was abundantly true to its avante garde category where ‘anything goes!’
