After an extremely lengthy process, Year 12 student, Andrew Chen has been selected for the second year in a row to represent New Zealand at the International Mathematical Olympiad, to be held this year in Brazil during July. The Olympiad gathers the best secondary school mathematician students from around the world to compete in a series of incredibly challenging mathematical problems from almost any field of mathematics.

The selection process for the NZ team began in September 2016. From the first selection paper, the top 26 students were then selected to attend a summer resident camp in January this year from which the top 12 students were named. These students then went on to compete in three Maths Olympiad competitions, lasting up to four and a half hours, from these, a team of six students were selected to represent New Zealand.

In the first competition of the three, the British Mathematics Olympiad, Andrew placed 1st in NZ, he then competed in the Australian Mathematics Olympiad and received a silver medal. The final paper was the Asian and Pacific Mathematics Olympiad, for which results are pending.

Congratulations Andrew and we wish you all the best for July!
