College Students Coach Visiting Primary Students

March 10, 2014 at 2:31 PM

The Year 13 students who are studying Sports Leadership were out on the field today with around 90 students from Glen Innes Primary School for one of a series of sports coaching sessions. The morning activities were part of our continuing service relationship with the local primary and their visits to our campus are much looked forward to by the younger students.

The young visitors, ranging from Years 3-6, took part in a sports circuit which included reaction games, frisbee, touch, baseball and an obstacle course. All of the games, drills and ideas were planned by the students as part of their course work towards the Manukau Institute of Technology Level 3 Certificate of Achievement in Sports Studies.

The course work includes planning to coach, delivering sports skills and an introduction to event management as well as other units of work.  In a large scale event, preparation is key so our students had an earlier practice session with Year 10-12 College students to ensure this morning’s events ran smoothly!

The final visit from the primary school will be next week on the College astroturf and in the swimming pool. Following the activity session there will be a festival BBQ organised by the Sports Leaders which will count towards their event management module.

These visits provide a great opportunity for our students to apply their knowledge whilst adding value and inspiration to our young visitors.
