Tennis History Made!

April 04, 2019 at 12:35 PM

At last week’s New Zealand National Secondary Schools Tennis Finals, Saint Kentigern made history as the first school to ever have a team in each of the three finals – Boys, Girls and Mixed! This was a great achievement for the College and all players performed well, resulting in some great results.

Particularly pleasing was the boys’ team consisting of Nick Beamish, Caelan Potts, Jack Loutit, Max Dickey and Samuel Hodges who won the National title, beating Christ College 5-1 in the semi-final, and Westlake Boys 5 -1 in the final. The boys retained the National title for Saint Kentigern relatively comfortably with all players preforming at their best.

In the girls’ competition, Ema Miyaura, Ana Tamanika, Ela Vakaukamea, Bridget Han, and Sofia Shing performed well but were beaten in the final by a very strong Westlake Girls’ Team, losing only in a count back of games after matches and sets were tied at the completion of play. This match could have gone either way but on the day Westlake took the edge, leaving our girls in second place by the closest of margins.

Sean Kelly, James McPherson, Aimee Brown, Ema Anderson and Olivia Moulder also made it to the finals in the Mixed competition but were beaten by a strong Macleans College team. The young team played extremely well and only lost on a count back of sets, 7 sets to 6, placing them second nationally.

Well done to all the players on their efforts and good luck to those going forward to the individual event this weekend!
