On the weekend of 16, 17 February, staff member Scott Maclaren represented Auckland at the Athletics New Zealand Combined Events Championships competing in the gruelling Decathlon event. This is a big year for Scott who wants to qualify for the worlds being held in Moscow and ultimately the Commonwealth Games next year and Olympics in 2016. The Decathlon has the athletes competing in the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m on day one and the 110 m hurdles, discus, javelin, pole vault and 1500m on day two.
Scott not only won 8 of the 10 events but he scored a massive 7,750 points some 720 points ahead of second place. Although there were no individual best performances in his total, his consistency helped him achieve the highest score at the New Zealand championships for over 10 years. This score would have placed him 3rd at the last Commonwealth games.
Unfortunately the qualifying criteria for New Zealand to send an athlete to the World Championships is 8060 so Scott will need to score well at the Australian championships or in Europe later in the year.
Scott trains our own athletes 5 to 6 mornings a week and is a great role model for any sport person who wants to achieve at the highest level.
