The Saint Kentigern College boys and girls Touch teams both competed in the 2012 Secondary Schools Touch Championships in Hamilton this month.
On day one the boys team started off a bit shaky with a loss to Kings School from Dunedin but went on from there with some very good results in the pool play to qualify through to the next stage of the competition. They played really well on day two and beat Nelson Boys, Palmerston North Boys High School, Marlborough Boys High School and Christchurch Boys High School. This saw them in the top spot for the semi-final against Hamilton Boys High School.
Hamilton Boys High School came out fast and were up by four in the first 8 minutes. Our Saint Kentigern College boys were not able to pull back the four goal deficit and went down 10 to 6. They then beat Rotorua Boys High School to place 3rd in New Zealand. William Raea and TJ Faiane were named in the boys’ tournament team.
The girls had a good start to their tournament on the first day with a win and two draws. On day two the opposition got tougher and the very hot weather saw them lose to both Mahurangi Girls School and Nelson Girls School. The girls had a great end to the day beating St Hildas School 3 to 2.
On day three, in beautiful conditions, the Saint Kentigern College girls’ lost to Christchurch Girls and then went on to beat Whakatane High School convincingly to finish the Nationals Championships in 7th position. Maia Jean Watene was named in the girls Tournament team.
Congratulations to these excellent teams.
