Winter Sports Roundup

July 01, 2016 at 2:18 PM

The winter sport season is nearing the business end, with most codes at or past the halfway point of their Auckland competitions. Following solid starts in the opening rounds, the bulk of our Premier teams are at or near the top of their respective leagues.

The Rugby 1st XV has won five of its seven matches in the defence of the 1A title, including a 32-14 victory over 2015 finalists, Auckland Grammar in their last outing. The team is sitting in third spot in the standings, one point ahead of King’s College, whom they play tomorrow at the College at 2.40pm. The boys would love to see you there, or you can catch the game live on Sky Sport’s Rugby Channel.

With five straight victories, the Premier Netball team is on top of the table. The girls are tied with Mt Albert Grammar School on points but are ahead on goal differential. They have scored 40 more goals than the next best team with 241, and have conceded the fewest goals, allowing just 109! Their next match is against McAuley High at 10.30am tomorrow at Auckland Netball Centre.

The Football Boys’ 1st XI is unbeaten in the Premier competition so far, with six wins and two draws. They are in second place in the league, while scoring the most goals (27) and allowing the fewest (3). They have also won their first two matches in the Knockout Cup, beating Dilworth 14-0 and St Peter’s 2-0. The Football Girls’ 1st XI is also in second place, with eight wins, two losses and a draw. They now enter the Auckland Provincial Championship after the term break, with their second place standing affording them a bye through to the second round.

The Hockey Premier Girls placed third in the Auckland competition and the Premier Boys narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth. Both teams are now competing in the SuperCity league – the girls are unbeaten after two matches without conceding a goal.

The Basketball Premier Girls have one win from eight games to lie in eighth position. However, they are just three points shy of Avondale in fifth place, whom they play tonight at Jordan Recreation Centre, Onehunga, from 6pm.

With the cold weather taking full effect, our students are in extra need of your support on the sidelines! Pull on your blue and whites and get along to a match to cheer on our boys and girls! We wish all of the teams well for the remainder of their season.
