College Winter Sport Season off to a Great Start

Perfect weather and perfect playing conditions prepared the way for a great start to the winter sport season over the course of last week.
Our Premier Football 1st XI Girls’ team, captained by Nikita Lieshout, were first to start the season of competitive play when they drew their first mid-week game 1-1 against Epsom Girls Grammar. This was followed by a great win for the Premier Basketball girls beating Auckland Girls Grammar 64-50 at their Friday night game. The Auckland Grammar boys proved too strong for our boys’ team on this occasion, winning 92-75.
Two of our premier teams took to the field on Saturday with wins for both teams. Following on from last year’s National title, the Premier Boys’ Football 1st XI played an outstanding game for an emphatic 4-0 win against Glendowie. Thomas Konusi will lead the team as captain this year.
This was followed in the afternoon by the first home game of the season for the Rugby 1st XV, captained by Sam Nock (Sesamani Tupou is co-captain this year but injury kept him off the field on Saturday). With only seven returning players from last year, this is a team with a number of younger players who came together well in a very close game against St Peter’s to win 36-31.
Premier Hockey starts later this week and the season for our Premier Netballers is two weeks away.
Pulling on the Blue and White to represent the College in co-curricular activities is a big part of being a Saint Kentigern student. Over the course of the year almost 1400 students in 138 teams across 29 sports, coached and managed by almost 70 staff, play their part - the sporting year is always challenging and exciting!
We wish all our teams all the best for the winter season – play hard, play fair!
