Last Friday six Year 7 and 8 cyclists from the College competed in the North Island Year 7 and 8 Cycling Championships held at Taupo Motorsport Park. For the first time in several years, conditions were near perfect with the fog giving way to a clear and calm sunny day.
Ben Connell won the Year 7 Boys’ Road Race after a good strategic ride, followed by Jacob Spring in 10th overall in the main bunch. In the Year 8 race, Campbell Jordan came away with the bronze medal.
The Year 8 Girls’ Team of Emma Hannan (Captain), Niamh Bilsborough and Sophie Spencer rode extremely well to win the silver medal. This is a huge achievement given they only had three riders, whereas most teams have four, and Sophie was riding in the grade above her age. In the Road Race, all girls competed with distinction. Sophie narrowly missed out on the bronze medal and Niamh recovered from a crash to get back on her bike and complete the race. Emma finished just off the back of the main bunch. Well done to all riders.
