Year 12 student, Liam Ward and Year 11, student Matthew Manning have been named in the inaugural Tri NZ National Talent Squad. This is both a very exciting and highly deserved achievement for these two athletes. The ‘NTS’ is described as ‘the peak of the National Talent Programme as the sport looks to foster its brightest young prospects with a view to progressing one day into the Tri NZ High Performance Squads.’

Squad members are identified on an annual basis with this first induction training through until April 2015 at which time another intake of young triathletes will be considered against the selection and performance guidelines. From this group, they can aspire to the higher development groups, of which 2012 SKC Tri Captain, Sam Ward, is currently a member.

As part of the NZ Triathlete development programme, a Regional Youth Academy is to be named in April. We are hopeful that College triathletes will be involved. The Regional Youth Academies will provide an accessible entry point for aspiring athletes of high ability to train with a similarly performance-focused peer group.
