Nous Parlons Francais… At the Boys’ School!

September 05, 2018 at 11:55 AM

Each year our boys prepare for the annual school-wide speech competition - it can be a nerve-wracking experience but at least they have the comfort of their mother tongue!

A lesser known speech competition at the Boys’ School is for those who are studying French. They, too, prepare a speech to share with their peers – en Francais! From this, a small group of boys were chosen to represent Saint Kentigern at the 2018 Auckland French Junior Speech Competition last week.

A wide range of schools from across Auckland were represented on the day which started with a trivia/general knowledge quiz about France and French speaking countries to test the students’ cultural knowledge. Spot prizes are awarded to keep the audience on their toes! During a break, the students were invited to order, in French of course, crêpes for their morning tea.

Then it was down to the business of speeches. The general theme for Years 7, 8 and 9 (CL 1-2 and Open category) was, ‘Someone or something I like.’ Three of our boys were recognised for the excellence of their speech and delivery. Well done boys!

Ashe Renault-Pollard, Year 8 Open, 1st place.
Ashe spoke about the two most important industries to New Zealand’s economy, dairy and tourism.

Nate Richardson, Year 7 Open category, 3rd place.
Nate spoke about his passion for tennis.

Finn Watney, Year 7, CL 1-2, 3rd place.
Finn spoke about his love of travelling to French speaking countries.
