Chamber Music Contest

June 13, 2018 at 12:19 PM

Following on from the recent Small Ensemble Showcase at the College, eleven of our Chamber Groups went on to compete at the Chamber Music Contest, held at Epsom Girls Grammar School last weekend. This annual music competition brings together the very best of Auckland’s young musicians.

This year we were delighted when the Escazy Trio, directed by Mr Lachlan Craig, were selected to participate in the semi-finals. From there, the group were further selected to perform in the Chamber Music Contest Final late on Sunday. This is the first time that the College has had a group chosen to play in the final and we are particularly proud of these students. The Escazy Trio comprises Izzy Bayley on voice, Esther Oh on violin and Catherine Chang playing the piano.

The Piano Accordion Trio were also invited to play during the Finals Evening while the adjudicators were deliberating on the results. They received the ‘Most Engaging Performance Award’ at the conclusion of the evening. This group consists of Adam Perry, Maia Perry and Yvonne Jin, directed by Mr Lionel Reekie.

To add to the success of the Escazy Trio and the Piano Accordion group, Year 9 student, Ian Chiao was a member of the Chamber Group that won the Auckland Final. Ian, along with two students from other schools, should be commended for his fantastic performance which was deemed the very best in Auckland. Well done, Ian!

We appreciate the work of all the students involved in the Chamber Music Programme and thank our large team of itinerants who prepared the groups for competition.
