As part of the Year 8 Service Programme at the College, 40 students took part in planting vegetables in the Community Garden Term 4 of 2019. Around 10kg of rocket seed potatoes and pumpkins were planted and left to grow over the Christmas break.
Prior to the Covid-19 lockdown, this year’s Year 8 Service students were invited to harvest the crop. Given the long, hot and dry summer we’ve experienced, it was pleasing to see so many potatoes! We estimate that the crop yielded between 60-80kg of potatoes and 40 pumpkins which were donated to the South Auckland Christian Food Bank and Glenn Innes families.
Once students return to school, they will be involved in general maintenance of the garden as they prepare it for the planting of the next crop, which is yet to be decided.
