Blood Bank

As part of our service to the community, each year the  mobile New Zealand Blood Service pulls up to College and our senior students over 16 are given the opportunity to voluntarily donate blood to help save the lives of those in need at a critical time. Blood donations make a real difference by helping others, and developing a sense of commitment to and connection with fellow Kiwis.

The equipment was all set up in the Sports Centre, the nurses were on standby, the comfy chairs laid back and the refreshments all waited for our unsung heroes to step up and willingly donate to  help others. For first timers, it can be quite an anxious wait but there's nothing like a little friendly banter on the sidelines to increase bravado! There was a bit of a delay to the start meaning less overall time available to donate but regardless, there was a steady flow of generous donors throughout the day. From their combined service, a total of 81 units of blood were collected, and since each unit has the potential to save up to three people’s lives, we have helped around 243 people! That is no small accomplishment considering the gift of blood can only ever come from another human being.

The New Zealand Blood Service recognises that selfless donors and special volunteers like our students and staff are at the core of New Zealand Blood Service, and they have extended their appreciation in the help that we have given in making this event such a success.
