Last week, a group of College Middle School students had the privilege of attending the Auckland Writers Festival to further their interest in writing excellence. The annual Festival attracts the very best local and international writers of contemporary fiction and non-fiction, along with scientists, economists, poets and journalists along with interested audiences to explore ideas, share stories and stimulating conversations. The Festival celebrates ‘curiosity and a sense of intellectual adventure, driven by the desire to spark ideas and get us talking,’
It certainly ignited the curiosity of our students. Here’s feedback from two Year 8 students:
Danya Wang reports: The Writing Festival was probably a highlight of my year so far. We got to hear from world famous authors, such as Angie Thomas, who wrote The Hate U Give, Dan Salmon, who wrote Neands, and Karlo Mila. There was also a talented poet, Nathan Joe. While the speeches were made, writing workshops were also held. I personally went to Bernard Beckett’s workshop, where we focused on script writing. I had a blast there and met some new people. If you ever get a chance, I would definitely recommend you to go!
Charlize Kerr reports: It was a fantastic opportunity to attend the Auckland Writers Festival! I learned a lot of new things that I can now incorporate into my writing to improve it. The workshop was fantastic because I learned how to write better and achieve my writing goals from a real author. I learned many new strategies and life stories about poets and writers from the lectures that I couldn't find anywhere else. We were able to ask questions and learn from one-on-one interactions. If you enjoy writing, poetry, reading, or simply want to learn from the best, the New Zealand Writers Festival is highly recommended.
