College Theatresports Welcomes Back Old Collegians

‘Arguably the East Auckland cultural event of the year…’ quipped Saint Kentigern Theatresports Coach and MC, Mr Dave Sheehan, at the ‘U Night For Malawi’ Theatresports event on Friday night in the Sports Centre Lounge.

Saint Kentigern’s best players from the last ten years competed against this year’s Premier Theatresports squad players in a night that certainly lived up to its’ ‘laugh a minute’ billing.

An audience of nearly 100 were treated to some inspired comic genius from Old Collegians: Ashton Brown, James Wenley, Jeremy Tant, Alex Leach, Reuben Bray and Callum Warner, whilst our current players, notably Tate Steel, Cameron Teare and Callum Andrews, stood up remarkably well against their ‘elders’.

Even the judges were stars on the night. Head of Drama, Mrs Bishop, kept the players to task as the Technique Judge, along with Old Collegian, former Head Boy and star of TV1’s show, Nothing Trivial, Blair Strang, who was animated and witty as the Storyline judge. Will Hall, also of Nothing Trivial fame, shared a few stories and responded candidly to questions about the upcoming, Nothing Trivial bonus, ‘tie up the loose ends,’ episode on Sunday 3 August.

The event had a twofold purpose: to unite past and current players for an evening of entertainment to raise funds for Malawi, and as a final selection night to choose the four players who will represent the College in the TYP (Theatresports Youth Program) finals series.  The selected team will play in the Eastern Zone Area Festival (regional semi-final) in the Music Centre at the College, this Friday 1 August with a hope to gain a place in the Auckland wide Grand Final on 5 September.

Saint Kentigern last won the Grand Final in 2009, were runners up in 2010 and 2011, third in 2012 and runners up again last year. They hope this will be their winning year!

For the reunited Old Collegians, this was their year! With a strong challenge from both the students and each other, it was the team comprising Jeremy, Alex, Reuben and Callum who were winners on the night – proving you’re never too old for a bag of lollies! The other Old Collegians team of Ashton and James, with support from student, Callum Andrews, followed in second place, having been pipped on the last game.

Service to others is fundamental to the Saint Kentigern College Mission and as such, ‘U Night For Malawi’ was a fundraiser for a unique Saint Kentigern World Vision project, run by Service Co-ordinator, Mr Robinson, creating financial support for a school in Malawi. The night raised a further $250 which, after the upcoming semi-final, should see $1000 raised by Theatresports towards the Malawi project this year.

‘We are hoping to see a big crowd in the Music Centre for the Semi Final this week,’ said co-coach Mrs Faharquarson. ‘The event starts at 7pm and in order to make the Grand Final we need to defeat 2012 Auckland Champions, Rosehill as well as St Cuthberts and Edgewater College.’

Entry to the event this Friday, 7pm in the Music Centre is $5 – to raise money towards the SKC World Vision Malawi project.
Refreshments will be sold.
$5 Tickets at the door from 6.30pm.
