Boys' School Visits Mangere Mountain

The Year 5 Boys’ School students took Social Sciences out of the classroom and into the field when they recently visited Mangere Mountain and Ambry Regional Park in Mangere Bridge.

As part of their Social Science Inquiry into ‘How the World Works’,thefocus was on how the geographical location of a place determines its landforms and uses.

During the visit, the boys completed a volcano walk and activities with a ranger.  This included walking to the plug, taking part in a gas eruption activity, walking around the rim of the volcano to view Auckland’s other volcanoes, walking around to the kumara pits and taking part in a lava eruption activity.  Finally, one class visited a lava cave while the other class participated in a civil defence activity.

Although a little apprehensive on entering the lava cave at first, the boys soon relaxed and were amused find that everyone looked like Bob the Builder wearing their hard hats! They were then awed to learn from the Ranger that the cave had formed when the volcano exploded 18,000 years ago.

It was a very successful trip and all of the boys loved the exploration.
