Wirihana Cup win!

It was a very determined Boys’ School 1st Xl that set out on a sunny evening last Friday in a contest with the ‘old boys’ to win the Wirihana Cup.

The cup was first played for in 1961 and this was a feature on the calendar until the cup went missing some years later. When it resurfaced in 2012, it was ‘game on!’ Each subsequent year, the former cricket players from the Boys’ School have been invited back to school for a challenge match and barbecue always played with a dose of good fun.

With several recent wins under their belt, this year, there was a definite air of confidence in the Boys' School team! 

The match lived up to expectations with a close fought encounter that actually ended in a tie - both teams locked at 131 runs off their allotted 20 overs! Therefore, like all good T20 matches, a ‘Super Over’ had to take place with the ‘older team’ scoring 9 runs. No pressure boys but the Boys’ School  1st XI needed 10 to win  - and did so off five balls with captain,  Brendan Meyer, taking charge with the bat and securing the win.

It was particularly pleasing to have Tim McIntosh playing for the old boys’ team - a past 1st XI player and New Zealand Test Batsman. Tim presented the cup to the boys and praised them for the way they played and the high level of skill they showed in the match.

The Boys’ School 1st X1 achieved their aim, making sure the Wirihana Cup is in its rightful place in the trophy cabinet on Shore Road!
