The Girls’ School Middle School students visited the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) to learn about the science of flight. So many of the students have travelled by plane to a variety of destinations but have not considered how this marvellous thing happens. It also served the purpose of discovering the early history of flight and the comparison between travelling in the past with today.
The visit to the hangar ensured that students gained a perspective of how big (or small) planes can be. The historic planes they viewed provided a wonderful comparison with the planes that fly them to their holiday destinations today. The girls were astonished that such small craft could carry both goods and people. The fact that some planes came in ‘kitsets’ and be built by ordinary people was also an unbelievable fact for many.
The students also examined the way birds are able to take to the air as well as how seeds are spread for future germination.
The pioneers of flight were also an important part of the discussion and learning, giving the girls an opportunity to question and consider the bravery of Jean Batten and all she achieved.
