The annual College vs Girls’ School Theatresports showdown is always packed with quality entertainment and quick-witted acting. This year’s edition was no different. College Head of Drama, Mr David Sheehan brought the brightest Year 7 and 8 actors to the Girls’ School to go head-to-head with their top two teams.
The College teams were accompanied by old Girls’ School students who stepped up to judge and MC the occasion. They were thrilled to see their old teachers and help run the workshop before the competition started. One of the student judges, Keeley Berkovits, was in the Auckland title winning College team from earlier in the year and had plenty of advice to share with the up and comers. The most important advice, though, came from Mr Sheehan who encouraged all the Year 8s coming to the College next year to ensure they select Drama!
The competition ran through three rounds and a tiebreaker. The four teams each played one game per round, cumulating scores out of ten. The Girls’ School team ‘Totally Not Dramatic’ made up of Sophia Pike, Jayen Long, Georgia Wang and Phoebe Wakelin, gained an early lead with their horror rendition of The Three Little Pigs in Genre Replay. ‘The Year 7 Girls’ from the College were hot on their heels, and it was these two teams that upon completion of the final round were all tied up.
To decide the winner, they went head to head with the game Space Jump. The coveted gnome trophy was clinched by ‘Totally Not Dramatic’ after their tiebreaking performance. Throughout the competition, their ‘entertainment’ score was incredibly high, often reducing the audience to quivering wrecks of laughter. Their success follows last year’s 1st place Girls’ School team, setting a winning streak to continue next year. Thank you to Mr Sheehan, Mrs Norton, and Mrs Melinda Downes for yet again, putting on another successful Theatresports competition.
