Contemporary Rock Evening

April 15, 2019 at 11:55 AM

Whether it was rocking out to ACDC or beating the rhythm to an original piece, the Middle College and Senior College rock students had it covered at last week’s Contemporary Rock Show.

The evening saw 14 diverse bands take the stage to perform in front of an encouraging audience. For some, this was a particularly nerve-wracking experience as it was their first time performing live. Each group performed two songs and by the second, all nerves were put aside, showcasing polished pieces.

The students have four opportunities to take part in the rock evenings, held at the end of each term with the students encouraged to write and perform their own songs. To help them achieve this, the music department runs specific workshops during the year calling on professionals from the music industry to take them through a writing session. In the past, the students have had the privilege to work with the likes of James MacDonald (from the Lorde band) and Jol Mulholland (from the LAB recording studios). This term, the students will be working with Timon Martin from the famous Kimbra band!

Under the direction of Mr Geordie McCallum, the rock programme has achieved significant success over the years and last night’s performances at the Music Centre were a great example of this! Our congratulations to all the students who took part in the evening. Well done!
