Adventure and Brotherhood on Boys’ School Year 5 Camp
The Year 5 Sons of Kentigern embodied their best selves during our unforgettable camp at Long Bay this year. Each day was filled with exciting new adventures, including Rock Climbing, Abseiling, the Giant’s Ladder, Crate Stack’em, Canoeing, Kayaking, Boat Safety, Boogie Boarding, Surf Skills, Outdoor Survival Skills, Māori-themed Projectiles, Team Building Sessions, Giant Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, and a Rocky Seas Shore Exploration. The boys demonstrated outstanding teamwork and enthusiasm as they embraced each challenge.
Each evening, we enjoyed a picturesque sunset walk along the shore before reflecting on the day in our camp journals. As a special treat, the boys were thrilled to enjoy a movie night on Thursday evening, a relaxing cap to the week.
For many of the boys, the week marked their first experience away from home for four nights. Their ability to support one another created a real sense of brotherhood. MERC itself was founded by a group of six friends with a remarkable vision, and the feedback from the instructors was that our boys displayed the creativity, imagination, and resilience to one day build their own meaningful legacy. We certainly saw those foundations being laid this week.
A heartfelt thank you to the exceptional MERC instructors and the team of parent helpers. Their kindness, encouragement, and unwavering support – along with plenty of good humour – helped make the camp so special. An additional mention goes to parents Lee Mcintyre, Travis Coffey, Ido Drent, Steve Langerak, Emily Steel, Fiona Dow, Rocky Blythe, and Jamie Ormiston for their presence which made all the difference to creating a truly memorable camp. Particularly, for their lively contribution of countless dining-time dance-offs between the parents and teachers, bringing plenty of laughter and energy to even the little moments.
